Around the World With Krewe des Bons Amis
“From Around the World” members and guests of Krewe des Bons Amis assembled into the West Calcasieu Event Center on the night of January 12. For many, this was the first Mardi Gras Ball of the 2019 season.
Charles Cubbage, President 2018-2019 and founding member of the Krewe, greeted the crowd and as his first duty, introduced King Henry and Queen Anne 2018, Ryan and Tracy Doucet as they made their final walk as King and Queen.
Justin Morris, Master of Ceremonies and Tour Guide for the trip around the world introduced Captain Michelle Gaspard and Co-Captain Anna Allen with Bruno Mars and “Let’s Go Crazy” playing in the background.
This is the fourth year to hold the position of Captain for Michelle Gaspard and eighth year as a member. She resides in Moss Bluff with her three children. Co-Captain Anna Allen and her husband Michael have been members of the Krewe for 10 years. Anna is retired from the Calcasieu Parish School System and resides in Lake Charles.
Representing the Czech Republic were King Henry XIV and Queen Anne XIV, David and Kayla Lyons. David is an Army veteran and currently a police officer with the Vinton Police Department. Kayla is a stay-at-home Mom with four children, including an exchange student from the Czech Republic. They have been married six years and have been members of the Krewe for three years.
Entertainment for the King and Queen began with a Dragon Parade from China.
The Duke and Duchess of the Bahamas, Suzanne and Aaron May, were presented next. Residents of Moss Bluff, Aaron is a captain with the Lake Charles Fire Department and Suzanne is a paralegal for the Hoffoss Devall Law Firm. They have been married 13 years and have three children.
In memory of their dear friend and founding member Christine Draper, the “Not Ready for Prime Time Sumo Wrestlers” skit that was originally choreographed by her was next. And Michael Allen and Jimmy Bastow would have made her proud. They performed to the songs “Kung Fu Fighting” and “I’m Too Sexy.”
As Duke and Duchess of the USA, Steven and Jolene John were the final court members. Residents of Moss Bluff, Steven is an Army veteran and currently employed by Citgo Petroleum. Jolene is employed by Turner Industries. They have been married 21 years and have two children.
The final destination was Egypt, where Leslie Cubbage, Leslie Gillespie and Zelda Lantier showed everyone how to “Walk Like an Egyptian.”
A toast was proposed in honor of the 2019 Royal Court. Members and guests participated in the traditional Second Line dance followed by a night of merriment!
