Krewe of Cosmos Salutes Small Screen Favorites
The Krewe of Cosmos celebrated its 69th annual Mardi Gras pageant on Saturday, March 2 in the Sulphur High School auditorium. The theme was “Cosmos Salutes Small Screen Favorites.” The Krewe is the oldest in Calcasieu Parish and has opened its pageant free to the public since it was founded in 1951. The Pages ushered everyone into the land where time will never forget the classics on the old tube TVs.
The pageant began with the national anthem sung by Krewe member Joe Castro. The Merry Makers came out to greet the crowd with music and beads, followed by the recognition of the board of directors and committee chairs for the Krewe. The Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Jill Lockhart. Next was the presentation of the night’s Royalty. The Captain of the Small Screen Favorites took control of the evening as he led the Krewe and guests through the celebration of the music and events as Cosmos presented its Royalty for 2019.
Captain Arturo Le Petit Flamant Qui Danse was revealed as Art Little. Born in Lake Charles, Art graduated from Sulphur High in 1970 and attended McNeese State University. He currently works for Greenberry Industrial LLC as senior estimator. He enjoys spending time with family, watching the grandchildren’s activities, entertaining friends, pitching horseshoes and participating in Mardi Gras fun. He’s a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of Men’s ACTS Retreat movement, Krewe des Danseurs Fou, Louisiana Horseshoe Pitchers Association, and President of Planning and Zoning Board for the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury. The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sulphur. He and his wife have three children, Jessica Wilfer, Amy Dever and Bobby Little, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren with another on the way. Art has been a member of the Krewe of Cosmos for the last 14 years and has chaired many Krewe committees. He and his wife Mary served on the Royal Court in 2011 and Art was Krewe president in 2015 and 2016. His costume was designed and created by Val and Don Smith of DVal Designs.
King Gabriel Alexander Martin and Queen Katherine Anna Marie Dupont were revealed to be I.J. and Sandra Tarou.
A native of Sulphur. I.J. graduated from Sulphur High School and Sowela Technical College with a degree in drafting. He was in the U.S. Army Artillery Surface to Air Missiles for three years. He retired from Bridgestone/Firestone after 37 years of service where he was a drafting supervisor. The King is a member of Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church where he is an Extraordinary Minister of Communion and collection counter. He belongs to both the third and fourth degrees of the Knights of Columbus and the Order of the Fleur de Lis. I. J. has held many office positions and chairmanships and is currently serving as Marshall of fourth degree for the state, family life chairman for Council 8978, purser for the fourth degree, and recorder for Fleur de Lis. I. J. serves on both Care Help and Water District #7 Boards and is also on both Sasol and Phillips 66 CAP (Community Advisory Panel) boards. He is an avid photographer and enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren, woodworking and traveling.
Born in Jennings, Sandra is a graduate of Midland High School and McNeese State University with Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in education. She retired from the Calcasieu Parish School Board after 29 years of service. She taught at Marion High and Oak Park Middle, but spent the last 20+ years of her career as a homebound teacher teaching the sick and injured children of Calcasieu Parish. The Queen is a member of Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church where she is an Extra Ordinary Minister of Communion, member of Altar Society, prayer blanket ministry, bereavement committee, and ACTS core team. Sandra enjoys babysitting her grandchildren, sewing, quilting, traveling, playing Pokeno, staffing ACTS retreats, and dancing. This May, the Royal Couple will celebrate their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Their four children are Kirk and his wife Iris of San Francisco, Kraig and his wife Crystal of Lake Charles, Kent and his wife Jennifer of the Woodlands, Texas, and Kristin and her husband Daniel of Sulphur. They are affectionately called Pop and Grammy by their eight grandchildren: Madison, Mallory, Ava, Emory, Dahlia, Korie, Etienne, and Spencer.
The King and Queen have been in the Krewe for six years, have been Jesters for four years and served on Court in 2015. I.J. has been Historian for the past three years. They have participated in parades, farewell and welcome to Court parties, and helped decorate for pageants.
The Duke and Duchess representing Spartan Cheerleaders were T.J. and Amanda Dougherty. Born in Sulphur, the Duke is a 2000 graduate of Sulphur High School, a 2004 graduate of McNeese State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and a 2014 Masters of Science in Nursing. He has been employed by Vein Center for three years, and is a Nurse Practitioner. The Duchess was born in Sulphur and is a 2001 graduate of Sulphur High School and a 2005 graduate of McNeese State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. She has been employed by the Calcasieu Parish School Board for 13 years, and has been a Teacher at W.W. Lewis Middle School for nine years. The Duke and Duchess are the proud parents of Lawson, 11, Aubree, 8 and Ella, 6 and attend St. Theresa Catholic Church in Carlyss. They have been Krewe members for four years, and the Duchess has participated in Jesters since 2017 as the Jester co-choreographer.
The Duke and Duchess representing Major Tony Nelson and Jeannie of I Dream of Jeannie were Daniel and Kristin Menard. Born in Lake Charles, the Duke is a 2009 graduate of Sulphur High School and has been co-owner/operator of Menard Custom Cabinets for 10 years. His hobbies include woodworking and working on his trucks. The Duchess was born in Lake Charles, is a 2003 graduate of Sulphur High School and a 2007 graduate of Northwestern State University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She has been an operations assistant at The Broussard Group for five years and her hobbies include crafting, scrapbooking, and watching her kids dance and play sports. They are the proud parents of Madison,13, Mallory, 11, Korie, 3, Spencer, 1, and are currently expecting #5 in July 2019! The Duke and Duchess attend Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maplewood, where they have served as catechism teachers and been involved in ACTS.
Krewe members for three and four years respectively, they have been the float chairpersons for the past two years. The Duke has been a Cosmos parade walker and has participated in the annual Ball, crawfish boil, membership party, pageant decorations, gala, and Jesters. The Duke and Duchess representing Fonzie and Joannie Cunningham of Happy Days were Lonnie and Bethany Bertrand. Born in Sulphur, the Duke is a 1989 graduate of Sulphur High School and received a BS in Government in 1994 from McNeese State University. He has been employed by Westlake Chemical South for 17 years and is a production shift supervisor. Lonnie’s hobbies are hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 8058 and is a Sulphur High Athletic Booster Supporter. He was awarded the Honorary Bishops Award for Devoted Services. The Duchess was born in Lake Charles, is a 1992 graduate of LaGrange High School and is employed by West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. Bethany is also a member of the Krewe of Athena. The Duke and Duchess are the proud parents of Paislee, 24 and Madden, 14. They attend the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maplewood. Krewe members for five years, they have been Jesters for four years. The Duke is a Cosmos walker, and participates in the annual golf tournament.
The Duke and Duchess representing Fred and Wilma Flintstone of The Flintstone were Pierre and Debbie Malus. Born in New Orleans, the Duke attended McNeese State University. He has owned Dairy Barn of Sulphur for 14 years and is a member of the Louisiana Restaurant Association. His business has been awarded Best Hamburger for nine years in a row, and has been honored with Outstanding Support for the Marine Toys for Tots Program. The Duchess was born in Sulphur and is a 1987 graduate of McNeese State University with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. She has been employed by The Sabine River Authority of Texas for 31 years, and is the Environmental Services Division Manager. Debbie is a member of the Water Environment Federation, and American Water Works Association. The couple enjoys boating at Toledo Bend, and spending time with family and friends.
The Duke and Duchess are the proud parents of Mindi, 35, Maureen, 34 and Pierre, 31. They attend Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church in Sulphur where they are members of the choir, and also attend Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church in DeQuincy. They have been Krewe members for six years, and participated in Jesters, pages and have been on the decorating committee.
The Duke and Duchess representing Matt Dillon and Miss Kitty of Gunsmoke were Tommy and Leah Brame. Born in Lake Charles, the Duke is a 1977 graduate of Sulphur High School and is retired from Westlake Chemical after 40 years. He currently enjoys staying home as a full-time Pops to grandchildren Slaydon, Camille and Sutton. His hobbies include hunting and fishing, specializing in catching large speckled trout, and pursuing big bucks! Tommy is a member of Coastal Conservation Association, Delta Waterfowl Association and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoys cooking, spending time at the deer camp and woodworking when time allows. Born in Sulphur, the Duchess is a 1977 graduate of Sulphur High School and a 1988 graduate of McNeese State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She is retired from the Calcasieu Parish School Board where she was a third grade teacher at W.T. Henning Elementary School for over 26 years. Currently, she is a full time MeMe to her grandchildren. Her hobbies include shopping, crafting, cooking, and attending exercise classes at SPAR. She is also a member of the Krewe of Athena, chairing the 2019 Flamingo Bingo.
The Duke and Duchess are the proud parents of, Kimberly Renee Glasspool and husband Jeff, and Kellery Gayle Barton and husband Zak. The Duke and Duchess attend St. Theresa Catholic Church in Carlyss and will soon celebrate 39 years of marriage. They have been Cosmos Krewe members for 5 years, and participated in Jesters in 2017 and 2018.
After the King, Queen, Captain and Royal Court were presented, the Jesters, dressed in MASH and I Love Lucy costumes came out to entertain the crowd. Following the presentation of the unmasking of the Royalty, members and their guests attended the Grand Ball at the West-Cal Event Center.
