Krewe Des Amis Creates A Party Playlist
Krewe Des Amis celebrated its 39th year on Saturday, February 16 in the Lake Charles Civic Center Coliseum. The theme for this year’s ball was “Krewe Des Amis Creates A Party Playlist.” The venue was transformed that night for Krewe members and guests to celebrate this year’s Mardi Gras season.
The 2018 royal court was introduced for the final time: King and Queen Brad and Nicole Posch and their dukes and duchesses, Damon and Jessica Lebato, Brian and Courtney McCain, and Chris and Mia Primeaux.
The first 2019 Royal Couple, Rodney Jr. and Jessica Duhon were introduced as the Duke and Duchess of Pop and Rock Music. The couple reside in Lake Charles. Duke Rodney is a firefighter for the Lake Charles Fire Department and attended McNeese State University. Duchess Jessica works for Lake Charles Memorial Health System as an employer health and wellness manager. She attended both Louisiana State University and McNeese State University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. Duchess Jessica is a member of the SWLA Economic Development Alliance Quality of Life Committee and a part of the Healthier SWLA Executive Leadership Team. The couple has two beautiful daughters, Anna, 12 and Kate, 4. They attend Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church.
The next Duke and Duchess representing Country Western Music, were Charlie and Paula McDonald. Duke Charlie attended Western Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. He is an engineer for Westlake Chemical and enjoys camping, volleyball, chasing his grandkids, sitting on the river and rum drinks on the beach. Duchess Paula is an Instructor at Sowela Technical Community College. She attended McNeese State University where she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry Education and a Master’s in Chemistry. She enjoys camping, having fun with her family, and crafting. The couple have three children, Brain McCain and wife Courtney, Jennifer Swann and husband Adam, and Sarah Negroni and husband Luis. Their grandchildren include Ruth and Sophia Mccain, William, Henry and Hazel Swann, and James, Alayjah, and Joshia Negroni. They also have three step-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren, Kris Oliver, Chance and Brittany Negroni, Legend Lee, and Tripp and Alton Jax. They live in Lake Charles.
The next court couple to appear was the Duke and Duchess of Hip-Hop Music, Marty and Brittany Castillo. Duke Marty graduated from McNeese State University and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and Nursing, as well as a Masters of Nursing. He is a Nurse Practitioner for Moss Medical Health Clinic and is a member of the Louisiana Association of Nurse Practitioners. Marty enjoys watching McNeese sports and the New Orleans Saints, golfing and spending time with his two boys. Duchess Brittany attended McNeese State University where she earned a degree in Art Education. She is an art teacher at Grand Lake High School. Brittany enjoys painting, reading, watching Bravo and drinking tea with her grandmother. She is a member of Artisan’s Gallery of Lake Charles. The couple has two children, Teddy, 5 and Gus, 4. They reside in Lake Charles and attend Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church.
The King and Queen of 2019, Brian and Nina Abshire, emerged to meet their family and friends. King Brian served eight years in the United State Marine Corps, He is a trucking owner operator for Leased to Packaging Corporation of America and is a member of the ACTS Community, OOIDA, and Sons of St. Joseph. He enjoys camping with his wife when time allows. Queen Nina is a school bus driver for Calcasieu Parish School Board. She enjoys supporting her granddaughters at their volleyball and baseball games, and pig and livestock shows. Nina is also a member of the ACTS Community and Altar Society. The couple reside in LeBleu Settlement and attend St. Raphael the Archangel. They have two children, Hellen Rachelle, 39 (deceased), and Joshua Cabe, 35 and six grandchildren, Morgan, 21, Tyler, 12, Sarah 11, Shelby 18, Kylie, 17, Isabella ,10, one great-grandchild Alydia Rain 15 months, and two fur babies, Buttons and Sassy.
The Krewe then toasted their Royalty and were treated to a final promenade by their court. Then it was time to party with music by Chinatown. Photography was done by Gary Meeks. All costumes and mantles were designed and made by Kevin Hodges.
