Krewe des Pirates Presents Pirates Around the World
Krewe des Pirates presented their ninth annual Mardi Gras Ball at Burton Coliseum on February 16. The theme was “Pirates Around the World.”
The Master of Ceremonies and Krewe member Mike Guidry asked members and their guests to stand as the Sea Cadets Color Guard presented the colors and the National Anthem was played. The Krewe’s Crest was presented by Krewe Advisory members Karen Larocca, Rebecca Spears, Ashley Guillory and Danna Sims followed by the introduction of the board of directors: Vice President Cherie Trahan, Treasurer Eddie Langley, Ball Chair Lottie Courvelle and Secretary Pam Harris.
The 2018 Past Captain and Court made their final walk. Next, a hearty pirate welcome was given to Krewe des Pirates 2019 Krewe President Captain Shawn Duhon. Shawn has been employed with Westlake Chemical for 11 years and currently works in maintenance supervision. He has been married to his wife Jessica for 14 years. Their son Jonathan is in third grade at Grand Lake and son Cameron is a sophomore at Southeastern University. Shawn and Jessica were Duke and Duchess for the very first Krewe des Pirates Ball in 2010 and served as King and Queen of Louisiana Treasures in 2017. Shawn enjoys hunting and fishing and spending time with family and friends.
The Captain led the Krewe members around the world as the 2019 Court was presented. “Don’t Worry be Happy!” as David and Sallye James, Duke and Duchess of the French Caribbean were presented. David is from Lyons Point, LA and Sallye is a Lake Charles hometown girl. Duke David is a US Army Veteran and Sallye is employed by the State of Louisiana. Together they have seven boys, one daughter and six grandchildren. David and Sallye enjoy camping, cook-offs and traveling. They love weekends and spending time with family and friends and thank God every day for all of their wonderful blessings.
Then it was off to the eastern coast of Africa as the Duke and Duchess of the Isle of Madagascar, Glenn and Rhonda Reed made their way off the ship. Glenn is an operator by WR Grace and is a certified emergency medical responder. He is a senior at McNeese State University, studying Environmental Science He was a member of the Buccaneers of Lake Charles for 10 years and was part of the original McNeese Cannon Krewe. He also holds a black belt in Taekwondo. Duchess Rhonda is a graduate of McNeese State University in Accounting and holds several certifications, including Control Risk Management and Internal Controls Auditor. Rhonda worked in corporate compliance and internal controls prior to retiring. The Duke and Duchess have been married for 28 years and are the parents to three awesome adults: Dustin, Tyler, and Alexis Reed.
The MC then took everyone from the ports of Vera Cruz, Cartagena, and Porto Bello, as fleets of Spanish galleons loaded with gold, silver, and jewels sailed through this area. King Pierre the 9th and of Queen Jacqueline the 9th King and Queen of the Spanish Main Manley & Danna Sims were presented and made their way to the center of the ship and their Royal promenade.
The King has been a process operator at Goodyear Chemical in Beaumont, Texas for 19 years. He is a U.S. Army Veteran, serving four years while stationed at Ft. Polk, Leesville. Manley has been a member of Krewe des Pirates since its beginning in 2010. He has served as a board member for five years in the capacity of advisory member, president-elect, and president. The Queen was born and raised in Orange, Texas and graduated from Little Cypress-Mauriceville 1978. She attended Panola Junior College and Lamar University, and has worked in the legal, medical and insurance fields. The Royal Couple have been married for 11 years and reside in Orange, Texas. They served on Court in 2013 as the Duke and Duchess of Barataria Bay.
King Pierre the 8th, Dean Harris, presented the sword to King Pierre the 9th, Manley Sims and Queen Jacqueline the 8th, Pam Harris, graciously presented flowers to Queen Jacqueline the 9th , Danna Sims.
Krewe members stood to toast the 2019 Court of Pirates Around the World. King Pierre the 9th proclaimed “Let us drain a goblet, twirl a can and shake a leg to our successes in the future! Drink up, me hearties! The evening was enjoyed by all. ARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!
Krewe des Pirates was founded in 2010 with the main focus of having a relaxed Ball that is everything you would want in a Krewe of Pirates. It is a Pirate’s life for us!
